Most buyers start here, and for good reason. The half-ton market covers the majority of real-world towing needs, and the 1500 lineup gives you four distinct engine options that each serve a different type of driver.
2.7-Liter TurboMax & 5.3-Liter V8
The entry point is the 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder. Do not let the cylinder count fool you. This engine produces 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, and when properly equipped, it pulls up to around 9,500 pounds. What really stands out here is payload. At up to 2,260 pounds, it actually leads the entire 1500 lineup in bed capacity, which makes it a smart pick if hauling materials in the truck bed matters as much as what you tow behind it.
Moving up, the 5.3-liter V8 is the most popular choice in the Silverado family for a reason. It is a proven, well-rounded engine that produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity climbs to around 11,100 pounds when the truck is properly configured. For most everyday towing situations, this engine handles things without breaking a sweat.
6.2-Liter V8 & 3.0-Liter Duramax Diesel
If you are shopping near the top of the half-ton class, the 6.2-liter V8 is the one to look at seriously. With 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, it pushes the ceiling to 13,300 pounds of conventional towing when paired with the Max Trailering Package. It is available from the LTZ trim and up, and for anyone who regularly operates close to the half-ton limit, the extra headroom makes a noticeable difference.
The fourth option is the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six, and it makes a compelling argument on two fronts. Torque output hits 495 lb-ft, the highest in the 1500 lineup, and maximum towing also reaches 13,300 pounds. Where it really separates itself from the V8 is on long hauls. Pulling a trailer across several hundred miles, the diesel returns meaningfully better fuel economy, which adds up fast over a season of regular use.
One thing worth flagging: if you are eyeing a Trail Boss or Z71 configuration, the lifted suspension geometry drops the tow rating to around 7,200 pounds. The ZR2 is the exception to that rule, rated at up to 13,300 pounds despite its more aggressive off-road setup.
Stepping Up to the 2500HD
There is a clear line between what a half-ton can handle and what the 2500HD was built for. The jump is not subtle. Two engine options are available here. The 6.6-liter gasoline V8 puts out 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, while the available 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 raises the stakes considerably with 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. Both transmissions are Allison 10-speeds, which is a genuinely more capable gearbox than what you find in the light-duty trucks.
Conventional towing on the 2500HD tops out at 22,500 pounds in the right configuration, and payload capacity reaches approximately 3,900 pounds. Fifth-wheel campers, heavy equipment trailers, and large car haulers all fall well within range.
The 3500HD: Top of the Lineup
The 3500HD shares its engine options with the 2500HD but operates at a completely different scale. In the most capable setup, a Regular Cab Long Bed dual rear wheel 2WD with the Duramax diesel and the Max Trailering Package, the 3500HD is rated for up to 36,000 pounds with a gooseneck hitch. That is not a number you see often in any segment, and it places the 3500HD firmly in commercial-grade territory. Payload capacity reaches up to 7,290 pounds, which speaks for itself.
Finding the Right Fit
For occasional towing under 10,000 pounds, the 1500 with the 5.3-liter V8 is more than adequate. Push that usage toward the top of the half-ton range on a regular basis, and either the 6.2-liter V8 or the diesel gives you the margin you want.
